Defective Skylight’s Continue To Cost Polish Retailers Millions

Defective skylights currently cost Polish retail industry millions of Euros a year in energy loss. So far the extra over cost is picked up by the retail centre tenants who share in the loss. Since 2013 SOLIDEA Group EVE® team have surveyed over 1 million m2 of Retail Roofing in Poland reporting that more than 80% of skylight smoke vents are found to be defective the majority only needing simple adjustment.

Comparing surveyed retail centres in Poland the Czech and Slovak republics in 2013 Poland has without question issues with skylights. Smoke ventilation skylights are installed according to the local fire requirements in the European Union, it usually means that between 3% and 5% of the total roof area is operable to evacuate smoke in the event of a fire. On large retail projects as much as 20% “EV” [Energy Variation] occurs as a result of defective smoke vents. “EV” is a negative it means energy loss. Continue reading

Can Retail Centre Photovoltaic Roofs Pay In Poland?

PPR Poland2014 is slated as the year when Poland will finally introduce feed-in energy tariffs for small utility green energy developments. A green certification system is introduced linked to the current black rate and paying a premium based on the stock market rate for green certificates.

 

“According the new energy law in 2014 anyone with sizable energy connections could install utility scale energy with the minimum of building or environmental permitting if it were installed over an existing parking apron”.

Commercial buildings which do not achieve Air Tightness often waste 20% to 40% of the total energy that they consume. When the building envelope is not tight energy is simply lost to the outside. Defective roof lights, smoke hatches and curtain walls, a result of poor design, defective construction, or incomplete maintenance is widespread. “We waste so much energy for no good reason” says SOLIDEA’s Steve Walker  “Air Tightness is the big ticket cost in retail, commercial offices and hotels, and it has nothing to do with the level of Insulation installed”

What is Air-Tightness?

The level of Air Tightness in a building is measured as Air Permeability it is the measurement of the volume of air which leaks through the building envelope per hour per m² of building envelope at 50 Pascals Differential Pressure. Air Permeability is then expressed as a rate for example 3 m³/h. m² at 50 PA which is much better than 7 m³/h. m² at 50 PA.
