Dr. Robert Mather and Professor John Wilson share a moment to show off their Solar PV Textile they call PowerTextiles. After many years in the laboratory these two eminent Scottish scientists successfully integrated PV into a polyester fabric. PowerTextiles is one conductive polymer layer integrated with conductive and semi conductive layers on polyester fabric.   Why are PowerTextiles the future of the Photo Voltaic Industry? PowerTextiles are more flexible than any other existing solar panel technology, firstly the surface of the fabric is not flat like traditional PV materials it means from the offset they can potentially harvest more sunshine than lets say ultra flat silicon or even flexible thin film cells. All solar harvesting averages but a few hours a day at best, unlike regular panels once the system is done for the day it can be rolled up, or retracted to become unobtrusive. Solar textiles are also temporary structures, potentially needing no planning permission. Unlike solar panels which are obtrusive PowerTextiles life cycle is truly extended as they can be placed out of harms way when not in use. Continue reading

The flaring of gas increases significantly worldwide. Many Countries like the United States who recently increased exploitation of new oil and gas fields not the least as a result of new fracking technologies do so at a terrific cost to the environment.

The Scale Of Flaring

Before 2010 flaring worldwide accounted for approximately 400 million cubic meters of gas per year. This creates emissions equivalent to over half a percent of total hydrocarbon and GHG fuel emissions worldwide today. Experts warn that flaring of gas for new fields and especially in North America presents a critical increase in GHG emissions which can soon account for as much as 1% of of all hydrocarbon GHG fuel emissions worldwide if not contained. Commercial buildings which do not achieve Air Tightness often waste 20% to 40% of the total energy that they consume. When the building envelope is not tight energy is simply lost to the outside. Defective roof lights, smoke hatches and curtain walls, a result of poor design, defective construction, or incomplete maintenance is widespread. “We waste so much energy for no good reason” says SOLIDEA’s Steve Walker  “Air Tightness is the big ticket cost in retail, commercial offices and hotels, and it has nothing to do with the level of Insulation installed”

What is Air-Tightness?

The level of Air Tightness in a building is measured as Air Permeability it is the measurement of the volume of air which leaks through the building envelope per hour per m² of building envelope at 50 Pascals Differential Pressure. Air Permeability is then expressed as a rate for example 3 m³/h. m² at 50 PA which is much better than 7 m³/h. m² at 50 PA.
